History

Dayton Airport was founded in the year 1928 by some people who were fascinated by the Wright brothers. The company that created it purchased over 300 acres of land from Vandalia. The airport then consisted of several hangars, an office, water tower, power station, and gas station. There were three minor runways.

Interest in the airport soon waned and financial problems arose. After the government took over the airport and financing came, the airport was opened in 1936 as Dayton Municipal Airport. There were three concrete runways and several flights per day from TWA. In the year 1949 it was expanded. More land was added and the terminal got bigger. Nevertheless, a new passenger terminal had to be built a few years later. The terminal was opened in 1961. After a dozen years, the name was changed to James M. Cox Dayton International Airport in 1975.

In the years that followed, the airport continued to grow and renovations had to take place at the terminal. Slowly, the various airlines also increased. For example, AirTran Airways started Dayton departures in 1995. The airport already consisted of more than 4000 hectares of land, which 9 airlines used. There were 20 destinations with dozens of flights a day. In 2008 a master plan was drawn up. A few years later, a large parking garage was completed, including a section for car rental companies. A year later, an air traffic control tower was put into operation. There were also extensions and improvements to the terminal such as a baggage screening system, new ticket counts, and extra checkpoints.

The airport is easily accessible by car to be dropped off in front of the terminal. You can have this done by a taxi but also Uber service or friends.
