History

In the year 1928 a piece of land was bought to build an airport near Charleston. The first Charleston airport departures started in the 1930’s. First with unpaved runways but paved within a few years including lighting. Like many airfields, this airfield was also used by the army of the US during WW2. Civilian service was still possible. After the war, a new passenger terminal was built. Due to the Korean War, the airport was once again used by the military. A new terminal was built in the 1980’s. Charleston International Airport is northwest of the city and is 9-11 miles from the city center. It is easily accessible by all kinds of transport. There are CHS airport departures with the CARTA buses, but also by taxi or the cheaper alternative Lyft and Uber. For example, at various hotels in the city there are still options for a hotel shuttle and of course you can travel with your own car to the airport where you can easily park. Yet, another alternative is to rent a car upon arrival from one of the well-known car rental companies. You can temporarily park at the curbside (number 1)  to pick someone up or at the hourly deck. Arrival area is on the left side of the building and Charleston Airport departures start on the right where the check-in counters are. If you want to park longer, you can also contact Daily Deck (future parking garage) and economy A.
