Since 1915 the air zone functioned as an airfield under the name of Royal Flying Corps in the First World War. For the following year, the aircraft installation was renamed RFC Rochford for combat centers. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the airport was liberated and established for commercial Southend flight arrivals.

This airport broke a record in 2019 when it accommodated more than 2 million people on some 36 thousand commercial flights.
