History of East Midlands Airport

The first EMA airport departures took place in the second world ware by the Royal Air Force. This was in the year 1943. By then there were 3 runways for East Midlands airport departures together with some hangars. More than 20 years later it has been redeveloped to serve civilian passenger flights. The last two decades the airport had multiple renovations and some of the facilities were extended. That resulted in an big increase of EMA departures until Easyjet ceased its flights in 2010. Not far later the airlines Jet2 and Ryanair decided to increase their capacity to the airport. to slowly increase their EMA flight departures. That resulted in almost 5 million passengers in 2018 and 2019. Unfortunately the pandemic hit and threw them back to just under a million in 2020. Besides the passenger flights there is also a lot of cargo processed. It is actually one of the busiest airports for cargo East Midlands departures in the UK.
