The airport of Ibiza (IATA abbreviation: IBZ) is the gateway to the Balearic islands of Ibiza and Formentara. In 2016, 7.4 million passengers made use of the airport, around 95 percent of the total number of visitors to the two islands.

Ibiza has a long history in the field of air traffic. Already in 1949, airport “Es Codola” was taken into use. This was intended to encourage tourism and for technical stops for international flights. However, the airport was technically deficient and closed two years later. A few years later, the authorities – partly due to the increased number of tourists in Mallorca – decided to breathe new life into Ibiza Airport. On April 1, 1958, the Aviaco company operated the first flights Ibiza-Palma and Ibiza-Barcelona.

In 1960 it was decided to build an air traffic tower and to expand the runway. In the following years, the airport of Ibiza gradually expanded. Ibiza Airport operated its first international flight on July 15, 1966. In the years that followed, the airport of Ibiza gradually developed. For example, the runway and terminal were expanded. In the present, the airport processes more than 5.5 million tourists a year. A number that increases every year.
