A little history
The first Gran Canaria Las Palmas arrivals took place in 1930. This quickly became the main airport of arrivals at the Canary Islands. A new terminal was opened in 1946 and a runway a few years later. It was not until two decades later that improvements were made to accommodate the growth of Las Palmas airport arrivals. The current terminal as it is today was built in 1973 with a second runway 7 years later. Because the airport became more and more modern and expanded, more and more routes and flights were introduced. Binter Canarias and Ryanair decided to have a base there. This resulted in an even greater growth in Gran Canaria Airport arrivals.
Terminal at Gran Canaria Airport
The airport’s only terminal is split into four zones, Zone A for flights to the Canary Islands, Zone B and Zone C for flights within the European Union and Zone D for other international air traffic. There are two Las Palmas arrivals halls at Gran Canaria Airport, Arrivals 1 in the north of the terminal for flights from Spain, LPA airport arrivals hall 2 in the south of the terminal for flights from other countries.
Passenger statistics
The passenger numbers have increased from 9 million to almost 14 million in the year 2019. Due to the pandemic, there are considerably fewer LPA arrivals in 2020 and 2021. This is partly because many of the flights are seasonal and charter with people who come for vacation to the Canary Islands.
