The Ponta Delgada Airport is also known as the Juan Pablo II Airport. It is the main airport in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores, near the city of Ponta Delgada. It is located on the island of São Miguel, and its current name is in honor of Pope John Paul II, who visited the Azores in 1991 and had Ponta Delgada departures.
About
Ponta Delgada Airport has located 2 km (1.2 miles) west of the Ponta Delgada city center. It is the busiest international airport in the Azores and is the fifth largest infrastructure operated by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal. There have been a big increase in Ponta Delgada flight departures since 2014 to eventually serve over 2 million passengers.
The terminal was inaugurated in 1995 for the first PDL airport departures and had domestic flights to all the Azores Islands and Madeira, Porto, and Lisbon. It also has international São Miguel airport departures to Europe and North America. Ponta Delgada airport in 2018 handled about 1,904,310 passengers.
