History

During the war in the 1940’s, an airport was built by the US. This was located in the Alfredo V Bonfil area. It was closed for years after that. In the 1970’s there were ideas to turn Cancun into a tourist area. Hotels were built and the land from the old airport was used for a new airport. A few years later, the first commercial flights were a fact. Many years later, there have been various expansions. For example, a third terminal was put into operation in 2007, together with a new control tower and runway. In 2014, the second terminal was expanded with more boarding gates and commercial areas. The fourth terminal is opened in the year 2017.
