Kuching International Airport (also called KIA) is the main gateway to Sarawak, Sabah, and Brunei, Malaysia. It is also an airbase of the Royal Malaysian Air Force; it can accommodate Boing 747 and A380 aircraft. It serves KIA arrivals in the East Malaysia region.
Kuching International Airport is 11 km (6.8 miles) south of downtown Kuching. It is one of the busiest air terminals in Malaysia, after Penang Airport, KLIA, and Kota Kinabalu Airport.
This airport was built by the then British government of Sarawak in the 1940s to process the first Kuching arrivals. Its inauguration was in 1950. In 2006 and 2008, this airport underwent drastic renovations to increase the Kuching flight arrivals, and the surface of the building increased to 46,000 square meters.
