Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) is an air terminal serving the city of Kota Kinabalu, the capital of the Malaysian state of Sabah. It is the main gateway to the island of Borneo and the state of Sabah. It is considered the second airport in Malaysia in terms of traffic, after the Kuala Lumpur airport but serves most KKIA departures in Borneo.

About
Kota Kinabalu International Airport is located about 8 km (5.0 miles) southeast of downtown Kota Kinabalu. By 2018, the airport handled 8 million passengers, which is why it has the title of the second busiest in Malaysia. The numbers of Kota Kinabalu departures keep increasing over the years.
The new terminal 1 building was inaugurated in 2008 for Kota Kinabalu flight departures and offered passengers all the comforts they should have at an airport. The airport began as a military airfield with Kota Kinabalu airport departures that the Imperial Japanese Army built in WWII.
It suffered severe damage from the Allied Forces bombing at the end of the war. After the war ended, the North Borneo Civil Aviation Department took over the maintenance and operations of the airport.

Terminal
The airport has two terminals for Kota Kinabalu flight departures which are:
- Terminal 1 is the main one at Kota Kinabalu International Airport. It can be accessed through Jalan Lintas, Jalan Putatan, and Jalan Kepayan, located in the municipality of Kepayan. This terminal can handle almost 9 million passengers per year and has 64 check-in counters for international and domestic Kota Kinabalu airport departures. There are three floors where you can find many shops, cafes, restaurants, ATM’s and more.
- Terminal 2 was the original airport building when it was first built. It provides its services to low-cost airlines and charter airlines with Kota Kinabalu departures. It has 26 check-in counters for national and international flights. In addition, it has six parking spaces for B737 and A320 aircraft.
