History

The history of flights at Chennai goes back more than 100 years. The first flight took place in 1910 in the Pallavaram suburb of Chennai. Probably even the first in all of Asia. The first real civil aviation in India started was a few years later. That was from Delhi airport. The first commercial flights to Chennai did not take place from Mumbai until 1932. At Chennai (Madras) the international flight was not until much later in 1936 with the route from Karachi. During the Second World War, the Indian Air Force used the airfield.

The first terminal in art deco style was built in the early 1950’s. Only 30 years later a new terminal was built. This became Kamaraj Terminal 1 for domestic flights. Not much later, the third terminal was completed called Anna Terminal 3 for international flights. The old terminal from 1954 became terminal 2 and used for cargo. Finally, a new international terminal 4 was also created in 2013.
