About Santo Domingo Airport

The Las Américas airport or AILA is the main air zone in the Dominican Republic, so it has many histories. In the 1930’s, the first air base was inaugurated with Santo Domingo flight arrivals. Then in 1944, the General Andrews Airport was built on it. However, this airport did not provide a good operation, so AILA revoked it.

Like the reconstructions at the airport, it has also gone by many names over the years. In 1959 the airport had the name of Punta Caucedo. In the 60s, it took the name “Las Américas.” After that, in 1998 it was called “Francisco Peña Gómez” and finally took the name of “Las Américas International Airport Dr. Francisco Peña Gómez”.
