Antônio Carlos Jobim Airport, better known as Rio de Janeiro International Airport, is one of Brazil’s largest airports and is located about 20 kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro’s city center, in the Ilha do Governador district.
The airport is named after the well-known Brazilian musician and composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, who was best known for his contribution to the Bossa Nova musical style.
The airport was opened in 1952 under the name of Galeão Air Force Base and originally served as a military base. In 1977, the airport was opened to commercial flights and was expanded with modern facilities to meet the demand for air traffic.
Terminals
The airport has two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminal 1 is mainly used for domestic flights and Terminal 2 for international flights. In total, the airport has 64 gates and 26 check-in counters.
